New Book - Christmas Project

Hi readers,

#Monday #WorkDay #NewIdea #NewProject #ChrsitmasProject #NewBook #LatePost

Jeans to work on a Monday? Hell Yeah!

Actually, jeans every day of the week? It's not something I ever imagined, but 👍.

Anyway, I work in the Civil Engineering and Construction industry, and I don't go to site as often as I should, but I made plans last week to go to a few to complete some tasks.

As I prepared for the visits, something struck; a new idea. I thought I was done writing for the year, but last Friday, I began plotting and putting all the story elements together, and on Saturday, I wrote the first chapter of the book.

Now, I can't wait to close from work each day or for the weekend, and I don't think I would be resting this Christmas break as planned, because I can't stop thinking about the story.

Want to know what the story is about? Check out the title and the image below:

Five days to go - All That Glitters

Hi readers,

#Sunday #Restday

Excited? I am. It's five days to the release of my novella titled "All That Glitters," and I can't wait to share it with you all.

For those of you who also can't wait and want to get a taste of what is to come, the book is now available for pre-order on major ebook distribution platforms like Amazon and Smashwords, and also on Okadabooks.

As a special offer, I've added a few chapters of my unpublished novel titled "Like Never Before." It was written earlier this year before "When It's Murder" and "All That Glitters." It's my second attempt at a love story, and one that doesn't involve the police or any detectives, although we briefly meet a private eye 😀.

See the cover and description below:

More Christmas BOOK SALE

Hi readers,

#Friday #TGIF #MoreGoodNews #MoreBookSale #Hohoho

I hope you all are doing well, and preparing for your weekend reads!

I have more good news because the book sale I'm doing this December has extended to two more bookshops in Victoria Island (Terra Kulture) and Ikeja (Trans-Atlantic Bookshop) to cover more areas in Lagos (check out the flyer for more information).

It's still for my full-length realistic fiction novel titled "Twenty-One Days."

Remember the book? It's a first of its kind, and loved by many, both young and old. It's both educating and entertaining, and it's filled with scandals.

What happens in camp, stays in camp (but not this time).

You still have enough time to get your holiday read and your holiday gifts... hurry now, before the sales end.

Please tell someone to tell someone to tell someone, and share the flyers as much as you can.

Christmas has come early - BOOK SALE

 Hi readers,

#NewMonth #December #Goodnews #BookSale #HoHoHo

I hope you all are doing well.

Christmas has come early this year because I'm doing two major book sales online and offline throughout the month of December 2018.

It's for my full-length realistic fiction novel titled "Twenty-One Days."

Remember the book? It's a first of its kind, and loved by many, both young and old. It's both educating and entertaining, and it's filled with scandals.

What happens in camp, stays in camp (but not this time).

I'm giving many readers out there the opportunity to get the book at a reduced price to support literacy and reading, especially for those who can't afford to buy a lot of books this season.

The book is available at Patabah Books LTD at the Adeniran Ogunsanya Mall in Surulere, Lagos, and online via Okadabooks.com (check out the flyers for more information).

Now you have enough time to get your holiday read and your holiday gifts for family and friends, and even foes... okay, just kidding.

You can get the book as a gift for students, recent graduates, even youth corps members (they would appreciate it). You can also use the book in your book clubs and reading groups, or give them out at your church or in hospitals. You can make a lot of people smile this month.

Hurry now, before the sales end.

Please tell someone to tell someone to tell someone, and share the flyers as much as you can.

#ManyThanks

I need your vote... please vote.

Hello all,

Two blog posts in one day? I guess I'm finally getting active on social media, at least for today 😁.

Anyway, I have a huge request for you all... once again, I need your votes.

So, it's that time of the year again... the time to hunt for the 50 Best Indie Books of the year. My baby's book "Mama, It's Me!" has been nominated. Could you help me vote, and help my baby bag this one? The book is the first of its kind... a story of the before-life.

To vote, please visit: http://www.readfree.ly/50-best-indie-books-2018/ and click on "Others" as the category. Scroll to the bottom of the page and tick the 4th option "Mama, It's Me!"

(I believe there's also a direct link to the page here: http://www.readfree.ly/vote-50-best-indie-books-2018/)

The good thing is that, you don't have to have read the book to vote, but if you want to read it, I can gift you an e-copy. Would you like that? If yes, please vote, and let me know that you have voted via email (laybels at g mail dot com), and I will reply with a copy of the book. Alternatively, you can ask for a different book to read if you prefer.

Voting is open until the 3rd of December 2018, so you have until that time to ask for one of my books to read after voting.

Thank you so much in advance for voting and accepting to be a part of my success story.

Newest Active Member - International Thriller Writers

Hi readers,

#Greetings #HappySaturday #TGIS #GoodNews

Say hello to the newest Active Member of the International Thriller Writers - ITW... ME!

Okay, I'm five days old, as my membership was granted on the 19th of November 2018.

No one knows what this means to me to officially be an Active Member of the organization, to learn, share and give back, and most especially, to be able to contribute to literacy and to the improvement of reading culture the best way I can.

Why is this important to me? Well, because I was turned down in 2013, LOL.

In November 2013, I self-published my first novel (The XIth Hour, Psychological Thriller/Suspense) and short story (Closed Door, Mystery/Suspense). This was before I developed "Closed Door" into a Novella, and a series (Angela Hunter Series). I was new to the self-publishing world, so I wanted to participate in events, become an active member in several organizations for writers, and just improve on my writing.

I came across ITW, as I had only written thrillers at the time, and I sent in an application to join the organization. I also sent in my novel and short story for the International Thriller Award, but I wasn't considered because I wasn't a member. In fact, they asked me which of my books qualified me for membership. The answer was none. So I didn't follow up on that.

For my request to become an active member, I was told that ITW was new to accepting self-published authors, but they would review my application and get back to me.

Fast forward three months, on February 2014, I received feedback on my application. After review by the board, I wasn't granted membership. The board asked me to consider re-applying for active membership when I become a bit more established in the self-publishing world. To be honest, I didn't remember reading that email after I closed it, but I saved it in a folder.

When I was about to create a new folder for ITW five days ago, I came across the old folder and read the rejection email again. I smiled, because now I know that I'm a lot more established in the self-publishing world, and even better, as I got a publishing deal with "Black Rose Writing" for my upcoming novel titled "When It's Murder."

Thanks to BRW, as my publisher and for giving my book a chance, I was able to join ITW.

Back then, five years ago, I had only one published novel and one published short story, but today, I have six novels (with the seventh to be published on 14 March 2019), five novellas (with the sixth to be published on 14 December 2018) and six short stories... and many more others to come.

I'm looking forward to an amazing experience with ITW, and I'll be bringing you updates on the publishing progress of "When It's Murder."

CMO.

Book Review: 30/30: Short Stories On Love, Life And Other Such Nonsense

Book description:

A collection of short stories discussing love, life, loneliness, culture, sexism, the human condition, sex and other such interesting topics.

***

Fantastic storytelling and writing in this collection of short stories. I loved the author’s play of words, the dialogue used, and the topics he wrote about. I liked the titles of the stories, and also liked that some stories were sequels to other stories. In the short but infrequent time I spent reading the book, I knew each character, so when their names came up again, I got excited to know what more they were up to.

The first short story “Lady In Waiting: A Tale Of Loneliness” was a nice one, and had a few twists in the just few pages that it had. I read it twice because I enjoyed it.

New Book, Cover Reveal and Preview: All That Glitters

Hello readers,

I hope you all are doing great, because I’m also doing great. In fact, I have some great news...

My novella, which was a top 5 finalist in the Quramo Writer’s Prize 2018 is coming soon... actually, it’s coming exactly one month from today, on 14th December 2018. I can't wait to share the story with you all.

While waiting, I have three other interesting things to share with you: the book cover. the book description, and a preview to wet your reading appetite.

So first off, the cover...

Drum roll...

More drum roll...

Okay, enough of the suspense, here goes:

Book Review: Once

Book Description:

Once is the story of a young Jewish boy who is determined to escape the orphanage he lives in to save his Jewish parents from the Nazis in the occupied Poland of the Second World War.

Everybody deserves to have something good in their life. At least Once.

Once I escaped from an orphanage to find Mum and Dad.

Once I saved a girl called Zelda from a burning house.

Once I made a Nazi with a toothache laugh.

My name is Felix. This is my story.

***

“Once” is a historical fiction novel by Australian author Morris Gleitzman.

I read this book with my nephew to help him develop a reading culture, and I’m glad I did.

Although it was a bitter-sweet story, it was fantastically delivered from the point of view of a young boy, Felix. We don’t know how old he is, but it would have satisfied me to know.

Felix is a Jewish kid living in an orphanage in Poland, an arrangement his parents have made to keep him safe from the Nazis. After more than 3 years there, Felix escapes in search of his parents. He manages to locate his house and his parents’ bookshop, but his parents are nowhere to be found. In fact, another family has taken over their home and bookshop, and they threaten to hand him over to the Nazis. He escapes and is advised by an old man to leave immediately. He should never have returned. He is now on the run, for reasons unknown to him, still with the goal of finding his parents.

New Short Story - The Whistling Swing

Dear all,

#Wednesday #HumpDay #GoodNews

Halloween is here... so is my new Short Story 😁.

After 4 years, I’ve finally written my first horror story... well, my attempt at a horror story titled “The Whistling Swing.”

Here’s a brief description:

“A neighbourhood is disturbed by a whistling sound at night and concerned residents are going missing. The nonchalance of the landlord towards finding a solution raises Jerry's suspicion and forces him to identify the source of the noise and put a stop to it. Jerry must battle with the strange happenings around him to get to the bottom of the case, but first, he needs to figure out what’s real and what’s unreal.”

The Whistling Swing was initially a Flash Fiction story of about 300 words, which I wrote in 2014.

Yay, I'm a Top 5 Finalist - Quramo Writers' Prize

Hey readers,

I didn't want to celebrate too much at first when I was listed as one of the Top 10 finalists, because I knew that a week later, the number was going to be slashed in two. I didn't want to celebrate too soon, but I should have because getting to the Top 10 is an achievement on its own.

Thank you to the judges for giving my story an opportunity, and I look forward to the unveiling of the winner.

I made the shortlist - Quramo Writers' Prize 2018

Hey readers,

I hope you all are doing well, because I am 😀.

Just a few moments after sharing information about my baby's birthday and the availability of his book across all e-book distribution platforms (see HERE), I got some amazing news.

So I entered the 2018 Quramo Writers' Prize - QWP  earlier this year, and sincerely, I didn't think my story was going to get shortlisted.

Why?

Mama, It's Me! - Now available across all platforms

Hello readers,

I hope you all are doing well.

I can't believe it's already been a year since I wrote this book, I mean exactly one year since the first draft of the book was completed. Do you know why? Because it's my baby's first birthday today!!!

I know you all are wondering if there would be another book for his first year, but don't worry, I already thought about that and began a draft. But then I changed my mind. I haven't decided to stop it completely, it's just on hold. The content is actually very interesting, so I don't want to let it go like that. Time would tell what becomes of it.

When the book was published on 15/05/2018 (read story HERE), it was available only on Amazon, so I'm happy to announce that it is now available across all platforms. Please tell someone to tell someone to tell someone.

You can get your copy on Smashwords, Okadabooks, Barnes&Noble, iBooks, and many other ebook distribution platforms. If you don't find the book on your preferred platform, please let me know, and I'll try my best to get it on there.

I hope you enjoy reading it, as much as I loved writing it... it's my baby's book after all. I have to love it.

When It's Murder: Character Look Alike - Kevin, Karen and Michelle Lake

#Goodmorning #Wednesday #Humpday

#CharacterLookAlike

If my book “When It’s Murder” was a #Nollywood movie, three minor but important characters, Kevin, Karen, and Michelle Lake would be played by Timini Egbuson, Adesua Etomi, and Rita Dominic respectively.

Just like Timini, Kevin is cute, calm, and soft-spoken. Although I've only seen Timini in one movie and he was a tough bandit, but people have commended his role in MTV Shuga, so I believe he can interpret the role of Kevin perfectly.

His sister Karen, who returns from college because of some disturbing news is similar to Adesua Etomi. Just her character in general, gentle, soft-spoken, but would speak her mind when necessary and still appear calm.

Michelle Lake, the mother of Kevin and Karen, is similar to Rita Dominic. She's always an actress I've liked right from time. Rita Dominic will easily play the role of Michelle Lake who is pretty, serious, and not picky with her friends. She accommodates everyone irrespective of their story or history, and that's what lands her in trouble.

When It's Murder: Character Look Alike - Sergeant Joe Kiddy

#Hello #Monday #Newweek #Newenergy

#CharacterLookAlike

If my book “When It’s Murder” was a #Nollywood movie, another minor but important character, Sergeant Joe Kiddy would be played by Ramsey Nouah. I saw a lot of movies with Ramsey Nouah in the past, unfortunately, I don't remember any titles. But his looks, coupled with the way he interprets his roles make him similar to Sergeant Kiddy. Plus I believe Ramsey Nouah will play a good detective, so he wins the role.

Sergeant Kiddy is blackmailed into opening a case he never even knew existed. He is reluctant at first, but when fresh evidence lands on his desk, he takes things seriously. In the end, he is surprised at how deep things run, but he is able to solve the case.

When It's Murder: Character Look Alike - Gab

#Hello #Saturday #Familyday #Restday #Latepost

#CharacterLookAlike

If my book “When It’s Murder” was a #Nollywood movie, a minor but important character, Gab Mason would be played by Abayomi Alvin, similar to his character as Akeem in "Girl Next Door."

Just like Akeem, young, intelligent, mechanical engineer, and good at his job, Gab Mason is young, intelligent, a techie, and a genius. One of his skills is what puts Emilia on the right track to finding her purpose, and another skill gives her an understanding of what she's dealing with.

Gab is Martins's son (a Nollywood actor for Martins is yet to be discovered), and together they make an amazing team.

When It's Murder: Character Look Alike - Martins

#Hiya #Friday #FriYay #TGIF

#CharacterLookAlike #ItsBeenAWhile

If my book “When It’s Murder” was a #Nollywood movie, another important character, Martins Mason would be played by... ? This is a tough one for me, as he's everyone's favourite, and even after this much time, no image still comes to mind.

Perhaps a few actors could fit the physical specification (a man with a potbelly, some hair, and a beard), but I tried for a while to look for a Nollywood actor similar to Varys (in the Game of Thrones) but didn't get anyone. Martins is very resourceful and knows how to get any information he wants... a skill that allows him to team up with Emilia, the main character, and help her find answers.

If you know any Nollywood actor who fits the bill, please drop a comment 😊.

Book Review: Thorns and Roses

Book description:

Ifeoma and her sisters escaped an emotionally abusive father to start a new life in Lagos. She is determined to never let another man have control over her, even if that means never falling in love. That is until she meets Chuma, a wealthy and domineering man who is exactly the kind of man she is determined to stay away from but somehow can’t seem to keep away from. An unlikely relationship develops, taking them from joy to a devastating loss and finally to betrayal. Ifeoma must decide, but she is torn between her painful past and a chance at a future with Chuma…

Chuma is a cutthroat obsessive financial mogul whose sole purpose in life is to make his family name great. And he is determined to let nothing distract him from achieving his goal. But when he meets Ifeoma, an elusive, hardworking chef, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to her. They embark on a turbulent journey of friendship and love, which is eventually shattered by tragedy. Chuma wants to heal the rift that has grown between them and will go to any lengths to do so. However, he encounters secrets from her past...

***

“Thorns and Roses” is a romance novel by Amaka Azie.

As hoped and expected, a very lovely and enjoyable story. In fact, it was the style of narration that made the story enjoyable, and the fact that there was dialogue from the start made me put voices and character to each character. Also, I’ve already read a little about the two main characters (in Melodies of Love), Chuma, enough to know the type of person he is, and Ifeoma, not so much before, so it was nice to know her own story.

I like how the characters are introduced, especially Chuma, as Mr. Frown-Face; you don’t have to be the smartest person in the world to know that he never smiles; and I liked how Ifeoma watched him from the shadows, making me long for the moment they finally meet.

When It's Murder: Character Look Alike - Sonia

#Hello #Wednesday #CharacterLookAlike

If my book “When It’s Murder” was a #Nollywood movie, another important character Sonia Bruen would be played by Uche Jombo.

Sonia is a calculating friend and lover, who would do whatever it takes to get what she wants. The secrets she has and knows are guaranteed to cause havoc, so she’s willing to keep them, as long as hers are safe!

The first person that came to mind who can play the role with both maturity and talent was Uche Jombo (from the little I've seen her play in movies). She looks calm but can get crazy when things get crazy. Also, her complexion and physical features are similar to that of Sonia.

When It's Murder: Character Look Alike - Samuel

#Goodmorning #Tuesday #CharacterLookAlike

If my book “When It’s Murder” was a #Nollywood movie, another important character Samuel Lake would be played by Richard Mofe-Damijo.

Just like Samuel Lake, Richard Mofe-Damijo is on the older side... a sophisticated older gentleman. And since he was born in Warri, and Warri people are naturally funny, I'm sure he'll do a fantastic job interpreting a comic role, especially when exasperated with Emilia McGreg and her many troubles 😀.

When It's Murder: Character Look Alike - Emilia

#Goodmorning #Monday #CharacterLookAlike

If my book “When It’s Murder” was a #Nollywood movie, my main character Emilia McGreg would be played by Tonto Dikeh. I must admit that I don't really remember the titles of all the Nollywood movies I've seen, but in the last few movies I saw of Tonto Dikeh (many years back), the different characters she played across all the films were somewhat similar, similar in a way that could look like Emilia.

Just like Emilia, Tonto is eccentric, unique, and doesn't keep calm until she gets what she wants, and they both have a lot of tattoos 😊.

Book Review: Broken

Book description:

At a young age, Promise is molested by her uncle, and her life is never the same again. She grows up to be promiscuous, using sex to meet basic necessities and luxuries of life. She's intrigued to meet Ope, a Christian man who practices celibacy, and in her attempts to make him fall, she falls in love...

But married life is not all she dreamed it would be. Their chemistry in bed leaves much to be desired, and Promise soon loses the fight against her sexual urges. Convinced that they can never work, she wants to leave, but Ope doesn't believe in divorce. In her struggle for freedom, she discovers the depths of her own wickedness, as she seeks to break the man she once loved fervently.

Broken is a story about broken people who break others, and the divine power of love that conquers all.

***

“Broken” is a novel by author Ufuomaee.

Promise (or Missy), the main character, suffers a detailed and graphic child abuse from age 9 from her uncle and it breaks her. It’s even more hurtful because he can easily move on with his life, with a wife, and plans to build his own family without even thinking twice about it. He isn’t remorseful and feels no guilt, but Promise is left hurt all over again, and it affects her future, turning her into a sex addict.

Book Review: You Used To Love Me

Book description:

After a tumultuous marriage, where she suffered emotional, physical and psychological abuse, comes to a violent end, Cheta is determined to begin her life anew. Alas, she is haunted by her past...and it threatens to destroy any chance of happiness in her future...

***

“You Used To Love Me” is a novel by author The Fertile Chick.

A nice and interesting story, although I was afraid it would be another "love triangle" at some point because it read like one of the author’s other books titled “The Love Triangle.”

I must admit that after reading her first book, which I didn’t really enjoy, I was worried about this one, since I had already bought it, and it surprised me because this one was much better and nicer.

What got me with the book was what appeared to be a murder, in the beginning, a body, a knife, and blood. Murder always comes with suspense, and that’s my best genre.

#FridayFeature: Meet The Author - Dan Abubakar

Hello all,

It's Friday again, and today, for our #FridayFeature we get to meet the talented Dan Abubakar, the first male author to be featured this year 😊.

Let's get to know him in 10 questions below.

1/ What’s your name (Pen name if different), and what does it mean?

Dan Abubakar. Born into a multicultural multi-religious family, I probably have one of the weirdest combinations of names, they include Nurudeen, Oluwaseun, Abimbola, Bio. A combination that has often confused people, so as an adult, I've always kept it simple; my international passport and drivers license both say Dan Abubakar. My birth certificate says a little more. I'm not absolutely sure what all my names mean but I know Oluwaseun is "Thank God" or something like that, Dan is from the Old Testament and Nurudeen is from the Quran.

New Book: Lost In Time

Yay!!!

Yesterday, I finished writing my fourth book for the year titled "Lost In Time," (formerly 'Trapped In Time,' but I changed it while drafting this blog post, lol). The book is to be released on... I have no idea for now, but you'll be the first to know when it's time.

As usual, it's a fast-paced character/dialogue driven book that I wrote in under two weeks, because insomniac writing machine.

Its genre? Time travel adventure/suspense.

Why time travel? My writing goal has always been to write in different genres, but with suspense in it, and that's what I'm still doing. I had the idea for a time travel story some years back, but I only drafted a plot and left it because something was missing. I wanted to add a new concept to time travel, but I kept missing something.

So while taking a break after writing my last novel "When It's Murder," the 'something missing,' came to me and it made perfect sense. I could now add my new concept/theory to time travel. I dropped every other thing I was writing (especially the books I had initially planned to write this year), then got into the time travel craze.

I love the story, I love that I was able to create a new world, new rules, and new everything. I can't wait to share the book with you, and I hope you all love it too. I'll be posting bits of the story on this blog from next year... stay tuned!

Here's the book description to give you a bit of what to expect:
In order to change her fate, specifically her love life, and make the handsome celebrity singer Aurelian Phillip, who she turned down in high school fifteen years ago, fall in love with her again, Marina and her reluctant best friend Stan are convinced by a funny-looking man to go on a time travel adventure to the past.

After arming them with the dos and don’ts of time travel, they set off, but something goes wrong along the way and Marina finds herself in an entirely different world without Stan. She must evade those after her in the new world, find a missing person, retrieve a golden key, and race against time or she would be forever trapped in time.

What do you think about the short description? I would love to give you more, but hate to spoil it for you.

Book Review: The Love Triangle

Book description:

Fola loves Jimi. Jimi loves Dolly...or Fola...or Dolly. The epic love triangle between the sisters and Jimi, that lasted two decades.
***

“The Love Triangle” is a romance novel by author The Fertile Chick.

The title tells it all, so does the description, and that was the attraction for this book. The idea as a whole was very nice, but the delivery could have been better. The book seemed rushed, but it was because 70% of it was a flashback from almost, if not more than 15 years back. That’s a whole lot of narration, and little to no dialogue, in some cases. A lover of dialogue, that didn’t cut it for me, as it made reading and memorizing names and dates a tad difficult. So unfortunately, it was a tough read for me.  At the same time, I know it's not quite easy to write a 15-year story without cutting out a lot of things, otherwise, the book would get too bulky and tiring.

When It's Murder: Character Look Alike - Kevin, Karen and Michelle Lake

#Goodmorning #Wednesday

#CharacterLookAlike

If my book “When It’s Murder” was a #Hollywood movie, three minor but important characters, Kevin, Karen, and Michelle Lake would be played by Jussie Smollet, Meagan Good, and Sanaa Lathan respectively.

Just like Jamal Lyon, Kevin is cute, calm, and soft-spoken. He takes life easy and doesn't get upset until pushed.

Kevin's sister Karen, who returns from college because of some disturbing news, is similar to Meagan Good. Just Meagan Good character/appearance in general, gentle, soft-spoken, but would speak her mind when necessary and still appear calm. Maybe like her character as Jacqui Dandridge in “Deliver Us From Eva.”

Michelle Lake, the mother of Kevin and Karen, is similar to Robin in "The Best Man." She is pretty, but not too playful and isn't picky with her friends. She accommodates everyone irrespective of their story or history.

When It's Murder: Character Look Alike - Sergeant Joe Kiddy

#Goodmorning #Tuesday

#CharacterLookAlike

If my book “When It’s Murder” was a #Hollywood movie, another minor but important character, Sergeant Joe Kiddy would be played by Jude Law. I loved his character in "Side Effects" as Jonathan Banks. His search for answers can compare to a detective or private investigator looking for answers. Plus Jude Law looks cool and sophisticated, so he wins the role.

Sergeant Kiddy is blackmailed into opening a case he never even knew existed. He is reluctant at first, but when fresh evidence lands on his desk, he takes things seriously. In the end, he is surprised at how deep things run, but he is able to solve the case.
